How does the tax system works

Tax becomes much less confusing if you know how the system works. Each article below covers a topic that will help you find your place in the tax system. In this section we take a 'typical' tax year. If you want to know the tax rates and allowances for a specific year, try the Rates and Allowances section. These are the areas we cover:

  • Who pays income tax?
  • What is a tax year?
  • The annual tax return
  • What sorts of income are taxable?
  • What tax allowances can I claim?
  • How is tax on income worked out?
  • Paying tax
  • What happens if I work for someone else?
  • What happens if I work for myself?
  • Other taxes on your return

These articles might take slightly longer to access than a simple link, but this arrangement enables us to update material more easily.

Look out for occasional extra articles of interest in this section.
